Top 5 Movies of 2006

I know 2006 is long gone but I wait for the dvd with most movies so I'm always a little behind on my viewing. Here is my list of the best 5 movies of 2006 that I have seen.

5) The Departed

The academy's choice for #1 is my choice for #5. Not the best movie made in 2006 but if you like the genre you likely enjoyed it as much as I did. Also if you admire strong individual acting performances there are about 10 in The Departed. Full Review

4) Talladega Nights

This movie isn't for everyone but I love it. I love Will Ferrell and this is Will Ferrell at his best. John C. Reilly is also fantastic as Ferrell's sidekick, who knew he could do comedy.

3) Stranger Than Fiction

This is another underrated movie. Very funny and touching and surprisingly well made in every way. Full Review

2) Little Miss Sunshine

Maybe the best all around comedy I've ever seen. If you haven't seen this movie yet your life is incomplete. Full Review

1) Pan's Labyrinth

This movie is a treat for the senses and deserved more accolades than it received from the assorted Hollywood movie awards. Full Review

Hey Dave, I've only scene two of these movies so I guess I've missed out this year! Although I saw about 10 minutes of Talladega Nights and that was enough for me. I need to see Pan's Labyrinth, I've been avoiding it because I can't really handle anything gory. But I will watch it.

I'm a little surprised that Babel is not on your list. Have you seen it?

I also recommend "Half Nelson".

I'd like to comment on your "quick reviews" section. Why only $4 for Taste of Cherry? And don't say cause it's boring, I want real reasons. I'm curious because this is one of my favourite movies. Glad to see you liked "Taxi Driver" this is one of my favourite's as well (a little gory though)

until next time . . .

Wow, I'm starting to feel like I need to see Pan's. Gory? What kind of gory? I love that Talladega Nights and Stranger than Fiction beat out the Departed. I have to admit I was belly-laughing at Talladega, and that's something most comedies don't do for me.

jeff and jon, Pan's Labyrinth is not as gory as Taxi Driver that's for sure. The gory bits are brief and intense but worth sitting through. They don't dominate the movie.

jeff, I haven't seen Babel or Half Nelson yet, I will but I thought my top 5 shouldn't wait until the fall and who knows how long it will take me to watch those two. I've heard good things about both.

jon, no doubt about Talladega, I went to the 5th level of comedy in the prayer scene.

jeff, Taste of Cherry, I knew you'd ask about that. It was underwhelming and boring but that's not the only reason I didn't like it. I felt like it was a simple and brief story that could have been told in 15 minutes but was stretched out into a full length movie with A LOT of empty space and repititious imagery. I liked the performance of the main actor and I liked some of the writing but overall I can't say I enjoyed or would recommend it to anyone.

i love empty space and repetitive imagery. So I guess it's a matter of taste. it's a simple story yes, but the content is anything but. the dialogue is outstanding and the last scene moves me beyond words. I understand though, that's it's not for everyone.
